Upton Cross Primary School

ENGLISH AS AN ADDITIONAL LANGUAGE

At Upton Cross there are 43 different languages spoken by the children and their families within the school. Most recent data shows that 94% of our children are classed as EAL (English as an Additional Language).

Any child who we feel requires additional language support or those that are newly arrived are baseline assessed. The first language of newly arrived pupils is also assessed if possible. Children who are new to the country are where possible given an induction in their home language and a class buddy (with the same first language if possible) to help them settle.

Specific small group language interventions are provided on a regular basis supported by our FLA’s (Foreign Language Assistants) across the school in order to help children close the gap. The school environment is designed in a way to be as visual as possible to support all children with their learning. Support, training and advice is offered to both parents and teachers where necessary.

We are proud that children at Upton Cross achieve significantly better than the National average for children with EAL.

At school we also have very skilled members of staff who speak a variety of languages. Please ask in the office or your class teacher if you need translation support.
