Phonics
Early Reading
At Upton Cross, we follow Read Write Inc (RWI) which is a literacy programme used at the earlier stages of reading and writing. It supports children to become fluent readers, confident speakers and willing writers.
Children receive structured phonics daily and are grouped by ability so that they learn rapidly at the right level.
What is RWI and how can I support my child?
This video is a great place to start, as well as the parent information on the Read Write Inc website. Click the sections below to see what Set 1, 2 and 3 sounds are, as well as ‘red words’.

Set 1 Sounds
All children in Reception and Year 1 are taught these sounds, but it takes lots of practice to learn them. You can use these ideas every day or as often as you can.
Here is a video showing you all the Set 1 sounds (watch up until 1 minute 15 seconds). Practice along with the video and then use a guide, linked sheets and sound cards to practise reading them speedily.

Red Words
Red words are words that aren’t decodable (or not with the sounds that children currently have). They need to be learned as whole words rather than sounding them out.
There are lots of red words to learn – here is a list of 15 early words to practise reading and spelling. You can write them onto cards and get your child to sight read them. They can also copy them out a few times each.

Set 2 Sounds
Set 2 introduces new sounds and alternative spellings. Children practise reading and writing these sounds in words and simple sentences.

Set 3 Sounds
Set 3 builds on Set 2 by introducing more alternative spellings and helping children choose the correct spelling in different words.
